Given the White Saffa’s love of sport I think it was the sporting boycotts that helped end apartheid.
The rugby lions went again in 1980 I believe and England in 1984.
S Africa were thrown out of the football World Cup in the early 1960’s and believe Sir Stanley Rous of the FA went there to try and negotiate their return to competition on a non racist basis. The South Africans suggested sending an all white team to the 1966 World Cup and an all black one in 1970. This was rejected

Loved the story of Gordon Brown the scottish lock having a set to with a Saffa in one of the provincial games... got in a punch up at a line out and knocked the blokes eye clean out (didn't realise he had a glass eye)... the game was stopped for a few minutes until they found the blokes eye... eventually found it and the bloke shoved it back in complete with about 5 or 6 pieces of straw/grass .... reckoned he looked the craziest bloke he had ever seen with this wonky glass eye with half the pitch poking out from behind.
